Hottest conditions will be in portions of the Champlain Valley. * WHEN...Until 8 PM EDT Thursday. * IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Indoor temperatures may continue to rise after peak heating hours in poorly ventilated spaces. Those without air conditioning should consider the potential for lingering health impacts while indoors late in the day.

During high heat events, your health and the health of your family and friends can deteriorate rapidly. The Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec, in cooperation with Environment and Climate Change Canada, recommends that you protect yourself from the effects of heat by taking the following actions: Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water per day even before feeling thirsty. As appropriate, follow your physician's instructions regarding the amount of fluid to drink; Avoid alcoholic beverages or caffeine; If you can, spend at least 2 hours a day in an air-conditioned or cool place; Take at least one cool shower or bath per day, or cool your skin several times per day with a wet towel; Limit physical activity; Wear light clothes. Be sure to: Never leave a child or a baby alone in a vehicle or a poorly ventilated room, even for a few minutes; Check on and be ready to help your loved ones, especially those who are functionally dependent, disabled, mentally ill or living alone.
